Lisl- Hillside Intern

donated books

Many of the Hillside interns have been volunteering as English tutors for Afghan families. This opportunity arose out of partnership with local refugee organizations, and it has been an enriching experience for every intern involved. Through tutoring, we have been able to form relationships with people that are different from us in language, religion, ethnicity and life experiences.

One of the things we noticed as we visited their homes was that they didn’t have any books for their kids. Of the numerous difficulties, big and small, that refugees face here in the United States, we thought that this was something we could help fix. We contacted Goodwill, and they generously allowed the interns to come to their sorting and distribution center to pick out over 100 children’s books. We now have a great collection of books that we can give to the families we tutor, which will serve to enrich both their childhood and their English learning.

We’ve already had a blast reading Curious George and “If You Give a Moose a Muffin.”
